Walther Edward "Walt" Stroup, 78, of Rome City died Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at 2:17 p.m. in his residence.

He had lived in Noble County most of his life, coming from Fort Wayne.

He graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Stroup served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1954 to 1957, during the Korean War.

He retired as a tool grinder/trouble-shooter from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 30 years.

He was a member of the Rome City American Legion Post 381 where he served as Past Commander.

Walt enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, and golfing. He especially loved to spend time with his family.

He was born October 1, 1936, in Fort Wayne to Donald F. and Winetta (Straub) Stroup. Later, he was raised and adopted by his stepmother, Eileen (Schelper) Stroup.

On July 30, 1960, in Fort Wayne he married Judith A. (Hawk) Stroup. She survives in Rome City.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kim (Barry) Metzger of Albion; a grandson, Josh (Emily Parker) Weible of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Megan (Dustin) Ewell of Cromwell; and six great-grandchildren, Gavin Weible, Corbin Weible, Brinlee Weible, Braden Weible, Dawson Ewell, and Jennifer Ewell.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald F. Stroup; his mother, Winetta Dubaugh; his adopted mother, Eileen Stroup; a sister, Donna Jean Stroup; and two sons, Donald E. Stroup in 1964 and Mark D. Stroup in 2010.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 10, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville with Chaplain David Fiandt of Rome City American Legion Post 381 officiating.

Burial will be in Sweet Cemetery at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Barry Metzger, Josh Weible, Dustin Ewell, Bob Walda, Michael O'Laughlin, and Kenny Neu.

Honor guard services will be provided by Rome City American Legion Post 381, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, and Kendallville American Legion Post 86.


The name on his death certificate is Walther Edward Stroup. Cause of death was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He died at home, 10804 North 300 East, lot 17, Rome City, Noble Co., IN.
