Judge Jeff Word Dies of Pneumonia~

Texas Jurist Ends Career of Fifty Years in Dallas~

Judge Jeff Word 74 years old, well-known Jurist of Texas, who had been in Dallas fifty years, died at his residence, ---- Ross Avenue at 10:15 o'clock Wednesday morning.

He had not been in the best of health, but was able to walk from the business district to his home Saturday. The exertion is believed to have brought illness which developed into pneumonia on Monday morning. His condition was not thought serious until early Wednesday when he began sinking rapidly.

Judge Word was born in Holly Springs, Miss. Nov 14, 1848. With his father Thomas Jeff Word, he moved to Texas a few years later, where the family settled at Palestine. He married Miss Mary Reeves daughter of Judge Ruben A. reeves and niece of Roger Q. Mills.

As a young man he began a brilliant law practice as the partner of Judge John H. Reagan of Palestine. After moving to Dallas he continued general practice until a few years ago when his partner her [sic] Judge J.W. Thompson died. Since that time Judge Word had specialized in civil matters.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Arthur Word of St. Louis. Three daughters; Mrs. Louise Leftwich of Carlsbad, N.M., Mrs. William Cavin and Mrs. Olive Titterington of Dallas and a granddaughter Olive Titterington.

Judge Word was one of the oldest practicing attorneys in Dallas and was a member of the Central Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, and will be in charge of Dr. Graham Frank. At Greenwood Cemetery Masonic burial services will be held.
