Notes for William Joseph Chrisman

From Find A Grave (listing for William Joseph Chrisman):

William Chrisman.
[Special to the Times-Dispatch]
Harrisonburg, Va. May 27.-- William Chrisman, seventy-eight years old, is dead near Elkton, Rockingham county. He was a former deputy sheriff. For two years he had been totally blind. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Jennie Giles, of Nelson county, of which union four children survive, including Miss Mattie Chrisman, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Olive Kirkman, of Greensboro, N. C., who was married the day before her father's death. His second wife was Miss Jennie Gay, of Harrisonburg, who left two children: Mrs. Frank, of Rockingham, and Dr. William G. Chrisman, State veterinarian, of Raleigh, N. C. He leaves two brothers [sic]: Major George Chrisman, of Amberley, and Mrs. Margaret Williams, of Harrisonburg.

The bracketed note at the beginning is in the original. There is a lot of confusion about his wives because of the similarity of their names, and this death notice helps to clear things up.

From Hardesty's Encyclopedia (see the notes for brother George):

His brother William J. entered the service at Harrisonburg in October, 1861, as second lieutenant Company E, 4th Virginia Infantry, and was made first lieutenant in November, 1862. He was later discharged for disability, and assigned to duty in the quartermaster's department, where the close of war found him faithfully serving. He was at home at time of surrender and never paroled.
