Notes for Moses Kanouse

From Find A Grave (listing for Pvt Moses Michael Kanouse):

War Veteran, 95, Succumbs
----------------
Moses Kanouse Served with Custer
----------
Moses Kanouse, 95, one of Omaha's few remaining civil war veterans, died Friday night at 3134 Forest Lawn avenue, where he made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Brown.

Mr. Kanouse, born in Pennsylvania, entered the civil war at the age of 18, with the 5th Michigan cavalry. He served under Gen. Custer, and when the war was over, rode in the grand review before President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D. C.

After the war, Mr. Kanouse's company came to Nebraska to campaign against the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians in this state, Colorado and Wyoming.

About 44 years ago Mr. Kanouse came to Omaha, settled on a farm north of Florence, where he lived 20 years. One brother, Rueben, 91, still is living in Pontiac, Mich. Two others died at the ages of 97 and 103, respectively.

Surviving also are two other daughters, Mrs. Grace Riceman and Mrs. Anna Gordel, both of Omaha; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The body is at John A. Gentleman mortuary.

[Some of the ages in this obituary are off, but I have left them as printed. The other two daughters mentioned were Kate's from a previous marriage.]

The Aaron Kanouse letter mentions Uncle Mose, who moved to KS.

From Ancestry.com, "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles 1861-1865":

Enlisted in Company C, Michigan 5th Cavalry Regiment on 07 Feb 1865. Mustered out on 02 Jun 1865. Transferred to Company F, Michigan 7th Cavalry Regiment on 02 Jun 1865. Mustered out on 15 Dec 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. [Note that these dates and companies are exactly the same as for brother Michael.]

Roy Oehler had his birth date as 11 Dec 1848, but Find A Grave says 15 Apr 1846. The 1846 date fits with him being 18 at enlistment (date shown in the above Ancestry.com record). However, the gravestone shown on Find A Grave indicates 1845 and the 1900 census shows his birth as Apr 1845, and 1845 fits with death at 95 in the above obituary.

Find A Grave and the new Master Knauss Descendancy list call him Moses Michael. I'm not sure if this is right or if they are mixing up him and his brother Michael.

From Find A Grave (listing for Pvt Moses Michael Kanouse):

Moses Michael's first wife was Kate Carr, born Ireland, previously married to John Carr and David Osborn per contributor jaknouse

Moses' second wife was Winifred "Winnie" (Loving) Rusk Fouke Kanouse (1847-1923). Moses and Winnie were married between 1920 and 1923. Winnie died on February 2, 1923.
