A Wilson Family Tree

Notes for Elizabeth A. (Minnie) Sandidge

Saline County Weekly Progress, 28 Dec 1894, p. 2 (obtained from Newspapers.com):

Death of Minnie Sandidge.
Monday's Daily.

We learn that Minnie Sandidge, the daughter of the late M. C. Sandidge, died at the home of her uncle, Leonard Wilson, of Denver, Colorado, on last Friday. Her brother, Micajah Sandidge, left Marshall some two or three weeks since to be with her in her last illness. She had consumption, and it was known when her brother left here to go and see her, that she could not recover.

Her's was a noble young life. She was bright of intellect, and her future was full of promise. She was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Mollie Wilson, and was at all times a dutiful and loving young woman. Her underlying nature was noble, generous, unselfish and self-sacrificing.

She was about twenty-two years of age. It was her request that she be buried in the Cemetery at Denver.

Since this obituary was published 28 Dec 1894, "last Friday" was 21 Dec 1894. However, her gravestone, shown on Find A Grave (listing for Mary E Sandidge) shows her death as 19 Dec 1894. This must be her, but I'm puzzled that she is listed as Mary E. Sandidge when other sources list her as Elizabeth A. Sandidge, presumably named for her mother. Minnie does seem like a better fit for Mary. Is it possible that calling her Elizabeth reminded everyone too much of her dead mother, so they changed her name?

In a letter from Leonie (Wilson) Rinker (Mary Wilson's daughter) to Elizabeth (Trinaistich) Wilson dated 28 Oct 1937, she wrote:

I was greatly shocked to hear of your sister’s death and at the same time much grieved for you and her family. Death seems to be something none of us can elude, and however much we may anticipate it, we never seem ready to part with our dear ones when they are called. Do you suppose your sister had infantile paralysis? She was so young to have the old fashioned kind. You are certainly an angel in disguise to take her baby, and I am so happy to know he has such a good home. My mother reared a niece under similar circumstances, and she was the only sister I ever had. She remained with us until she died at the age of twenty-two.

1880 census
Listed as Minnie Sandidge, age 8, born in Missouri, both parents born in Kentucky. Had measles. Living with her uncle and aunt, Leonard and Mary W. Wilson.
