According to http://www.georgechrismanhouse.com/8.html, he was son of William S. Herring Sr. and Elizabeth Stephenson. His father William was a brother of Bathsheba Herring, who was President Abraham Lincoln's grandmother. Alexander Herring was a first cousin to Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln.
