Official Of House Dies at 34

Daniel W. Mitchell, Journal clerk of the State House of Representatives, and a member of the House staff for nearly six years, died Sunday at University Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was 34.

Mr. Mitchell had been ill several weeks.

Born in Lansing Feb. 25, 1932, he was a graduate of Eastern High School and held bachelor and master of arts degrees in political science from Micigan State University.

He also received a bachelor of laws degree from New York University after winning a Root Tilden scholarship for law school study at that university in 1953.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army reserve when he graduated from MSU in 1953 and was on active duty as executive officer of an Army military police company in California and Germany, leaving military service as a first lieutenant.

Mr. Mitchell was a page in the Michigan Senate from 1947 to 1952, while attending high school and college.

He joined the House staff in March, 1961, as assistant clerk of the House and continued in that position under Norman E. Philleo, then clerk of the House until 1965 when he became Journal clerk.

Before his appointment to the House staff, he taught political science and law at Cleary College in Ypsilanti.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 33, F&AM.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hardesty of Lansing; a brother, Gary L. Mitchell of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; a stepbrother, James H. Hardesty of Lansing; and his grandmother, Mrs. Wesley Mitchell of Lansing.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer-Bush Funeral Home, with burial in Card Cemetery at Coldwater.
