Anne Noble Sims Smith died peacefully Saturday, June 5, 2010, at her home, Waverley Hill, in Staunton, in her 87th year. She was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Savannah, Ga. Her father, Irvin Augustus Sims, died when she was a few months old; she, a brother and two sisters were raised by their mother, Dorothy Hubbard Sims.

At an early age, her family moved from Savannah to Portland, Maine, where she spent her childhood years.

She attended Mary Baldwin College during the war years, graduating with the Class of 1945. In her senior year, she was student government president and the May queen.

After college, she was employed by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in Boston, Mass. There she met her future husband, Dr. Herbert McKelden Smith Jr., who was there for medical training.

They were married July 10, 1948, at the Church of All Saints-by-the-Sea on Southport Island, Maine, and then returned to Staunton, where they raised a family and Dr. Smith practiced medicine until his retirement in 1984.

Her husband was incapacitated by a stroke in 1996, and she did not leave his side until his death eight years later. They were married 55 years.

Over the years, she participated in a number of local organizations, including Trinity Episcopal Church, the Mary Baldwin College Alumnae Association and Augusta Garden Club.

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Sims Ryan of Falmouth, Maine; a daughter, Emily Smith Talley and her husband, Stephen E. Talley, of Staunton; a daughter, Dorothy Smith Childers and her husband, Robert A. Childers, of Anchorage, Alaska; and a son, Herbert McKelden Smith and his wife, Diana Donnelley Smith, of New Canaan, Conn. She also is survived by grandchildren, Henry Sims Talley of Staunton, Emily McKelden Smith, who lives in Tsubame, Japan, and Anne Donnelley Smith of New Canaan; three nieces; and a nephew.

Memorials may be given in her name to either the Mary Baldwin College Endowment Fund, PO Box 1500, Staunton, VA 24402 or to Valley Conservation Council, 17 Barristers Row, Staunton VA 24401, her favorite charitable organizations.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 214 W. Beverley St., Staunton, with the Rev. Paul Nancarrow officiating.
