FLORENCE - Florence realtor Frank Henry Barnwell of 810 Cheraw Ave. died Saturday afternoon in McLeod Infirmary after an illness of several months. He was 74.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in All Saints Episcopal Church by Rev. Lynwood C. McGee. Burial directed by Stoudenmire Funeral Home, will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Barnwell, a retired US Army colonel and veteran of two world wars, organized and was commanding officer of Battery A, 263rd Coast Artillery in the South Carolina National Guard in Florence after World War I.

He was born August 3, 1893 at Adam's Run, a son of the late Gabriel Henry and Elizabeth Thompson Marshall Barnwell. He attended Charleston High School, Porter Military Academy and Clemson College.

After attending Clemson, he served with the US Army Engineers on the Mexican border. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant after attending the first officer's training camp at Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga.

During World War I, Mr. Barnwell served in the 323rd Infantry, 81st Division and the 30th Infantry, 3rd Division in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He entered the real estate and insurance business in Florence after World War I.

Mr. Barnwell was commander of the Nation Guard when the late Sen. Olin D. Johnston, took over the State Highway Department.

When the 263rd Coast Artillery was activated into World War II in 1941, Mr. Barnwell returned to active duty and rose to the rank of colonel before retiring in 1945. He became active in the real estate and insurance business again and was president of Frank H. Barnwell Inc.

He was a former chairman of the Florence County Democratic Party and had served of the Florence City Council. He was a member of the City, State and National Association of Real Estate Boards and was a past president of the Florence Board of Realtors. He was a member of the Florence Lions Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Fred H. Sexton Post No. 1, and was a mason.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Jessie Gregg Barnwell of Florence; a son, G. Henry Barnwell of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Dargan of Florence and Mrs. Edith Tobin; and 2 grandchildren.
