Kerma Ann Shanahan
Kerma Ann (Silvernale) Shanahan, 73, of Greal Falls, a homemaker who was active in her community and church, died after a short illness Saturday at a local hospital.
A vigil service is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel. Funeral liturgy is noon Thursday at St. Ann Cathedral. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, James Shanahan of Great Falls; daughters Leslie (Doug) Myers of Fontana, Calif., and Jamie (Gary) Phipps and Kathleen (Harold) Henderson of Great Falls; a brother, Roger Silvernale Jr. of Marion, Mont.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Kerma was born July 28, 1934, to Roger and Helen (Buckingham) Silvernale, in Great Falls, Mont., where she was raised and educated until her sophomore year. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., to attend an all-girls school. Following her graduation, she returned to Great Falls and attended the University of Montana for a short time.
She married Jim Shanahan on Feb. 11, 1956, in Great Falls, and then stayed home to raise her family.
She loved to play cards, and she taught her kids many different card games. She belonged to the Red Hat Society, Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Daughters of the Nile, Great Falls Stamp Club, and Studio 706 Arts Guild.
Kerma was a member of St. Ann Cathedral and sang in the choir. She loved sewing, making clothes for her granddaughters, and going to Alaska to fish for halibut in the summer months. She tried every hobby imaginable and had a great artistic talent.
Kerma loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was there to witness the birth of her last great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, John Shanahan; and her parents.
