IMPORTANT IDEA
Miss Myra Waller Ewin, who died recently in Jackson, Missouri, enjoyed an unusual distinction. In her career as a teacher her students included both the man who was to become President of the United States and his wife. President and Mrs Truman were both members of her class when they attended school at Independence.
In one of the classrooms somewhere in the country today sits a future president. These schoolrooms do hold the boys and girls who will one day be the leaders in the United States as well as those who will be less noted citizens. That is why it is so important for our schools to be the best possible places for them to receive the education and training they will need.
Not every teacher can be so fortunate as to have a future president as a student. But it is necessary to have teachers who realize how much of the future of America is in their hands. It is also important for boards of education and other citizens to realize the importance of good teachers and to set salary standards which will attract intelligent, dedicated people to the task.
