https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/41202563/person/19599457933/facts lists him as Joseph Newton Searls, but "Faus Genealogical Data" has Jasper Newton Searls. The former is by a descendant, so I will go with it. The Ancestry family tree (Patrick McCoy Family Tree) lists him as born in West Virginia, but West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1863. According to both sources, his parents were Jacob H. Searls and Josephine Jividen.
