Notes for Riley Ben Tandy

Anchorage resident Ben Tandy, 86, died Dec. 22, 2005, at home. A visitation and a funeral were held at Abbott Loop Community Church. Interment was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Mr. Tandy was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Boulder, Colo., to Ben and Lucile Tandy. He graduated from Pocatello High School in Idaho and the University of Colorado with an electrical engineering degree in 1942. Mr. Tandy was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in 1945 and served until the end of World War II. He was assigned other duties stateside. He taught at the University of Colorado engineering school before earning a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1947. He moved to Ohio to work at Ideal Electric Co. for several years, then returned to Boulder in 1951 and worked at Dow Chemical Co., Rocky Flats, until retiring in the 1970s. He was a certified professional electric engineer. He and John Beacham acquired a gold claim and started a mining operation, "The Butch," which they worked for more than three years. He was foreman in the Sweeny's rare earth mill, both in Boulder County. In 1977, he and Ruth moved to Alaska, where he worked at Waukesha Alaska Corp. They returned to Boulder briefly, then moved back to Alaska during the 1980s. Mr. Tandy was a pianist, prospector, scientist and biblical scholar. He rigorously studied the Bible for many years and learned Greek to clarify his understanding. His family said: "His first responsibility was to God, then to his wife Ruth and his family. He led his family on many camping, fishing and hiking adventures. He was admired for his good nature, humble demeanor and positive outlook."
Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Ruth Tandy; daughter, Carol Tandy and her partner, Martha Olsley; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Linda Tandy and Gary and Janet Tandy; nine grandchildren and their spouses; two great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Louise Farrell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marlin and Helen Thurston and Sylvia and Lew Blight; and other relatives.
