Notes for Richard Gathright Maury

From a post to the Gathright mailing list by Carolyn Gathright on 23 Mar 2016:

Houston, Tex., April 13 – Owing to the untimely death of Criminal District Attorney Richard G. Maury, victim of an automobile accident between Houston and Galveston yesterday afternoon, public business was suspended at the courthouse today, all courts having adjourned. The local Bar Association met this morning and adopted suitable resolutions. Few men were held in higher esteem than Mr. Maury and his passing has cast a damper over all circles. Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later. Mr. Maury was killed on the Galveston-Houston road Sunday afternoon when an automobile he was driving struck a cow that had strayed on the thoroughfare. His left hip and left arm were fractured and he sustained a fracture at the base of the brain. He died within a short time after the accident without regaining consciousness. Mr. Maury was 36 years old and unmarried. He had been public prosecutor of Harris county since 1911 and at the time of his death was in the midst of a campaign for re-election. He served as an assistant to the attorney general last year in an investigation of Texas oil companies, in addition to his duties as prosecutor. He was a member of a dozen clubs and societies. San Antonio Light. 13 April1914.
