Notes for Robert Berry
Most information I have on him is from censuses, and there are lots of conflicts about where he was from. In U.S. censuses, Theresa Lino (or whoever talked to the census person) stated that her father was born in France in 1900 and 1930, but said English Canada in 1910. In 1930, Theresa's native language is listed as French. In the 1850 U.S census for Cohoes, NY, Robert Berry is listed as born in Canada. In the 1861 Canadian census for Galt, Ontario, he is listed as born in L. Canada, which I understand to mean Lower Canada, and the notes for the census on Ancestry.com say that is roughly southern Quebec. Then, in the 1871 Canadian census for Galt, it says he was born in Massachusetts! Presumably some kind of weird mistake there... I have not been able to find him in the 1881 Canadian census or the 1880 U.S. census. Daughter Ellen, in the 1891 census, lists her father as born in Quebec.
