While reading an article entitled 'Building the Rend and South Branches and South Side Mainline In New River Gorge, Part 1' by Wendell McChord, in the Jul/Aug 2014 issue of the Cheaspeake & Ohio (Railway) Historical Society magazine, pages 6-24. Reference is made to J Fred Effinger (1846-1932) becoming president of the New River Consolidated Coal Company, which was formed to combat shrewd business actions by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Coal Agency, managed by George H Ingalls, after his father Melville Ezra Ingalls was named preident of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company by J P Morgan in 1888.
