Notes for John Antes Eckman
The Morning Call, Allentown, PA, 15 Nov 1949, p. 9 (obtained from Newspapers.com):
JOHN A. ECKMAN
John A. Eckman, retired Lehighton R.1, lumberman, died at 5 p. m. yesterday at his home. The 71 year old man suffered a heart attack yesterday morning.
A native of Serena [sic], Columbia county, he was a son of the late Samuel J. and Hannah Fought Eckman and had resided in Allentown before moving to Lehighton R. 3.
Eckman had operated saw mills 26 years before retiring in September, 1939. Prior to entering the lumber business he operated a creamery in Millville and later at Cambria with his father. His wife, the former Pearl M. McHenry, died September, 1939.
Surviving are five daughters, Doris B., wife of Donald L. Miller, and Beatrice J., wife of George Deri, both of Allentown; Zoe C., wife of Ernest Schurmann, Brooklyn; Mrs. Dena Mae Speering, Augusta, Ga. and Betty A., wife of Franklin Heintzelman, Lehighton R. 1; four sons, Donald M., Lehighton R. 3; Samuel R. and William C., both of Gilberts, and Joseph D., Effort; 21 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bessie and Pearl Eckman and Naomi, wife of Frank DeMott, all of Allentown, and Mae, wife of Bruce Eyer, Eyers Grove.
The birth and death places here (Millville and Franklin) are from the Ward and Bucher family tree, but note that the above obituary seems to imply that he was born in Sereno and died in Lehighton.
The origin of his middle name is revealed by the Find A Grave listing for his grandmother. She is listed as Barbara Steele Krug Antes, and there is the following note:
First married 1838 to Samuel Eckman (died about 1840), 1 child
Second married 27 Feb 1844 to Jonathan B Steele (died 1864), +4 children
Third married Rev. William W. Antes (died 1882).
