Notes for Abiel Leonard Guitar

From the Columbia Missourian, 13 Sep 2004 (obtained from Ancestry.com, United States Obituary Collection):

Abiel Leonard Guitar of Columbia died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at his home. He was 95.

Mr. Guitar was born on Feb. 11, 1909, in St. Louis to Odon Guitar Jr. and Florence Estill Guitar. He married Rosa Marie Roux on June. 28, 1948, in Washington, D.C.

He owned Brown Derby Liquor Store, previously located in downtown Columbia, for 25 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Mr. Guitar was active in thoroughbred horse racing for 75 years, traveling all over the country with his horses. His latest horse, Teachem Kelli, purchased last spring, was trained by David Gall at Fairmont Park in St. Louis.

Gall said Mr. Guitar had been coming to Fairmont Park for at least 40 years, and Gall said in all that time, he never heard him say anything negative.

"He was the nicest person to ride for," Gall said. "He never did complain, not that he had much to complain about -- he always had good horses."

Gall also said Mr. Guitar was a true gentleman.

"He was a very nice fellow," Gall said. "He was always very polite."

Mr. Guitar's wife; two brothers, Wallace Estill Guitar and Odon Guitar Jr.; and two sisters, Florence Guitar Wood and Mary G. Dickinson, died earlier.

Services were Saturday.

There was a story in the Columbia Missourian, 19 Apr 2008 (http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2008/04/19/demolition-guitar-house-makes-way-shopping-center/), about the demolition of the historic Civil-War-era Guitar house to make way for a shopping center. The story mentions the death of Abiel Leonard Guitar in 2004 (it was his house before he died).
