Source: Campbell Chronicles by Early, Page 517. He was a Revolutionary War War soldier #W28009.

Known in the town as "Uncle Thurman".

Source: Pension record W. 28009. While residing in Albermarle Co., VA, John Thurman volunteered sometime between the years 1776 and 1779, served at various times amounting to three years in all, as a Private in the VA troops under Captains John Miller, John Key, S/Christopher Clark, Epperson, Brown and Benjamin Harris and Colonel Lindsey. He was in several engagements, one of which was near Charlottesville, VA, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, after which he was discharged in October 1781.

Listed as having land on the Big Fork of the Pigeon River, Sevier Co., TN dated 1824. (This could be John, Jr.) from TN Land Grants: Bk 9, p 89, No 9009 Fredrick EMMET, 25 Jun 1824 6 Aug 1824: "40 acres on the waters of big East Fork of Pigeon River in Emmets Cove. (Sev. Co. Entry No. 64 dated 7 Jun 1824) adj: John THURMAN"

Buried in Stafford Cemetery, Sevier Co., TN. Toward Newport on US 411 to bridge over the Little Pigeon River. From the bridge drive 1.4 miles and turn right onto a dirt road. The cemetery is 0.1 miles ahead on the right.

"...one of the creeks off the French Broad River in northern Sevier Co, possibly near where that survey was done for a John Thurman where one of the chainmen was a William Thurman and the other was a Randal James, who just happens to be a son-in-law to John and Nancy Sandridge Thurman."

Some list a Jabez THURMAN as a child. He fits in the birth order by his dates, but others list him as a child of a Joseph THURMAN.
