Brents Dickinson, Jr., noted attorney, dies

A prominent Glasgow attorney, Brents Dickinson, Jr. died last night at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. He was 77 years of age.

He was born in Glasgow, the son of the late Bartlett Graves and Lelia Rogers Dickinson, and attended Glasgow schools, having the distinction of playing on Glasgow's first football team in the early '20's. Upon graduation from Glasgow High School, he attended the University of Arizona for one year, then transferred to the University of Kentucky where he received his LLB and was admitted to the Bar in 1927.

He practiced law continuously in Glasgow, with the exception of a period of Voluntary service with the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Following the death of Hon. John Richardson, he formed a law partnership with Uhel O. Barrickman, and practiced in that firm until his retirement in 1979, completing 52 years of continuous law practice. He received special recognition from the Kentucky State Bar for his yers [sic] of honorable service and continued interest in the advancement of the profession of law.

He was active in Democratic politics and served as Judge of the Glasgow Police Court, 1930-1938; was Barren County Attorney, 1938-1946 and served as City Attorney from 1946-1950. He was called upon often to serve as Special Circuit Judge throughout the area.

He was a member of the Glasgow Rotary Club for over 51 years, and served as its President in 1933-34. That club bestowed its highest honor upon a member, naming him a Paul Harris Fellow in 1979.

He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church, a Deacon, and taught the Combs-Dickinson Sunday School Class in that church for 35 years.

Mr. Dickinson was active in many civic and business activities over the years, being a member of the Glasgow Free Public Library Board, Glasgow Cemetery Commission, first secretary of the Federal Land Bank, organizer and one of the original stockholders of the Glasgow Country Club, American Legion, Am. Bar, Kentucky Bar Association and Glasgow - Barren County Bar Association.

His wife, Gwendolyn Holman Dickinson, predeceased him last year, and he is survived by two sons, Henry H. Dickinson, Glasgow, and Brents Dickinson, III of Bowling Green; a daughter, Lelia Ann Smith of Cheney, Washington; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Fred Ganter of Glasgow, and three brothers, William Dickinson, and Drs. Lewis and John Dickinson, all of Glasgow.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home tonight. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made to the Memorial Fund at the First Christian Church.
