Notes for John Courtenay Trewolla
WFT 137 # 299:
John Courtenay Trewolla was born April 16, 1802 near Truro, Cornwall County, England. He was christened on November 27, 1803. He married Elizabeth Boase in the town of Penzance, Cornwall County, England on January 3, 1825. She was from a prominent Cornish family and was born on November 21, 1804. The family came to America in 1836. There is no record of the port they sailed from or the port where they landed. However, it is presumed that they landed in Richmond, Virginia for it was the port of entry for immigrants with destinations of Virginia or North Carolina in 1836. One child, Maria, was born in 1835 and died on board during the journey to America. Her body was wrapped in a blanket, weighted and put overboard by sliding it along a plank into the sea. The family first settled in a village called Young's X-Roads, 17 miles north of Oxford, North Carolina in July 1841. John was apprenticed to a tailor in England and followed the trade in North Carolina. The migration to Western was in 1846. Details of this journey were in two diaries kept by John Courtenay Trewolla and his son, John Henry Trewolla. John Courtenay Trewolla died on May 27, 1857 in Christian County, KY.
