Histories and Families of McCracken County, Kentucky (1989; obtained from the Trewolla Moskop Haas Mansfield Tree):

GILLUM AUS CHANDLER, born in Graves Co., KY, Apr. 28, 1879, married Mary Emma Harrison in 1904. Mary was born Feb. 28, 1881 to Wm. Davis Harrison and Mallie E. Hobson of Ballard Co., KY.

Aus' father, Alex Chandler, a farmer of Graves Co., KY was born in North Carolina, came to Kentucky, married Amanda, a Kentuckian by birth. To this union was born J. Thomas, Joel, Oscar, Gillum Aus, Nora, Lillie and Wendell.

Nora married 1st Harvey Farmer, 2nd Mr. Bell; Lillie married 1st John McDonald, 2nd Mr. York; Wendell married Belle Harris, one son Rev. Frank Elmo Chandler, who married Anna Bell Stokes and Oscar married Rebecca E. Bond.

Aus and Mary had four children: Robert Harrison who married Lillian Copeland, daughter of Berry Paul Copeland Sr. and Willie Lynn Byrd of Mayfield, KY; Mary Lillian who married Howard E. Randle Sr., one child Howard E. Jr., who married Louise Mason daughter of Dabner Rhea Mason and Carrie Norene Wolfe of Todd Co., KY; and James Burnly (Jim Buck) and Thomas Moses Chandler were not married.

Aus was a successful Paducah merchant and owned property in McCracken and Ballard Co., KY. He served in the Spanish-American War, 39th Voluntary Infantry. Aus was only 15 when he enlisted, according to the story handed down through the family.

Mary Chandler died at their home Feb. 7, 1942 and Aus died at home Aug. 24, 1944. Mr. and Mrs. Chandler are buried at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Ballard Co., KY. Submitted by grandson Howard E. Randle Jr.
