Notes for Alfred Herbert (Bert) Bynon

Full name is from Bob Speckman. Most sources have his name as A. Bert Bynon, though he is listed as Alfred H. Bynon in the 1910 census. In the 1900 census he is listed as Augustus H. Bynon, which I don't understand.

From the New Mexico Examiner, 2 Oct 1938 (as reproduced in "My Charmed Life"):

Veteran News Man To Be Buried Today
Death Removes A.B. Bynon, Journalist, After Colorful Life

The death of Alfred Herbert Bynon, a pioneer California newspaperman, and for the past three years a resident of Santa Fe, wrote a "30" to a colorful newspaper career of over half a century.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, June 12, 1868, of Welsh parents, Mr. Bynon's family moved to California when he was a small boy and entered the newspaper business. Mr. Bynon's father and an older brother founded the Hollywood Citizen, which is still in existence.

After learning the printing trade in his father's office and learning to write under his father's tutelage young Mr. Bynon branched out for himself and before he was 25 years old was working on the Los Angeles Herald. From that paper he went to the old Los Angeles Express as editor.

Attracted by the young man's forceful writing, Gaylord Wilshire, famous English socialist leader and Southern California real estate magnate, engaged him to edit Wilshire's Magazine, printed first in New York and later at Toronto, Canada.

Back on the Pacific coast again he engaged in the publishing and directory business and for several years was Pacific Coast representative for R.L. Polk Directory Company.

Always returning to his first love, Mr. Bynon founded papers successfully in various California cities, several of which are still published. During the war, with two of his sons serving (sic WWI) overseas, he was editor of the Vallejo, California, Times.

Coming to Santa Fe three years ago, following the death of his wife Mr. Bynon has made his home with his sons in this city, and in one capacity or another has been actively connected with the publication of the Examiner up until two days before his death.

Mr. Bynon is survived by four sons Larry and Nelson of Santa Fe, Henry and Cedric of California, a daughter, Mrs. Clifford Carrier, of Phoenix, Arizona, a brother Fred, of Salem, Oregon, a sister, Mrs. Ella Clinton, of Portland, Oregon, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 from the Sayre-Andrew Funeral Home. Reverend A.P. Gaines, pastor of St. John's M.E. Church will officiate. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Examiner employees with whom he has worked since coming to Santa Fe.
