He is listed as Josiah in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and Joseph in the 1870 census. Knauss Family Genealogy lists him as "Josiah (Joseph?)". He is also listed as Joseph in a listing on a picture of the nine Kanouse brothers.

From Roy Oehler's Ancestry World Tree site:

Obituary: (Newspaper Unknown)
---------
Josiah Kanouse was born in Columbia county, Pennsylvania, April 15th, 1850, and died January 20th, 1914.

He was married to Jennie May Wood in Bethel, December 22, 1 875. To this union were born two children, Emmet, now of Ludington, and Lydia of Ithaca. He leaves besides the immediate family, six brothers and two sisters. He has resided in Gratiot county about 20 years. Funeral was held from the home and interment made in Ithaca cemetery, Rev. C.L. Beebe, officiating.

Note that his gravestone (Find A Grave, listing for Josiah Kanouse) shows his birth as 1851 and death as 1913, which can't be right. It's amazing how many gravestones are incorrect.

The name on his death certificate (obtained from Ancestry.com, Michigan Death Records 1867-1950) is Josiah Kanouse. Cause of death is listed as autotoxemia with rheumatic arthritis. Place of death is listed as Newark Twp., Gratiot Co., MI. Parents are listed as Abraham Kanouse and Elizabeth Fauss.
