Notes for Phoebe Jane Kanouse
In a letter dated 4 Jan 1952, Aaron Kanouse referred to his Aunt Phoebe. In the probate file for Abraham Kanouse (obtained from Ancestry.com), her name is spelled Phebe. It is also spelled that way in most censuses, though it is Phoebe in the 1900 census. However, on her grave stone (and maybe one or two other places) it is spelled Pheba (Find A Grave, listing for Pheba J. Kanouse Rubley). I think for now I will stick with the standard spelling of Phoebe, which is also how it is spelled on her death certificate.
Find A Grave gives her birth as Feb 1849, and her gravestone clearly says 1849. Her death certificate gives her birth date as 16 Jan 1849. But she is listed as four years old in the 1850 census, 12 in the 1860 census, 22 in the 1870 census, and the 1900 census says she was born in Feb 1847. Not sure what's going on. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that censuses were messed up, but it's also possible that the birth date on her death certificate is wrong. (I'll note that ages for Michael, Moses, and Phoebe are all pretty far off in the 1850 census.)
The name on her death certificate (obtained from Ancestry.com, Indiana Death Certificates 1899-2011) is Phoebe Rubley. Cause of death is listed as carcinoma of liver. Place of death is listed as Jamestown Twp., Steuben Co., IN. Parents are listed as Abraham Kanouse and Elizabeth Fauss.
