He joined the fight for American Independence in Cumberland Co., VA and was sized on 18 Mar 1 782. His description: John BRUNT, age 19, 5 ft. 8 inches in height-black hair, hazel eyes, dark complection. Blacksmith-Cumberland Co., VA (DAR Application of Jacquelyn Wright Jones Kahler, Livermore, KY)

John Brent-Military Warrant No. 889. 10 Jun 1783 100 acres
John Brent-Military Warrant No. 1765. 16 Sep 1783. 200 acres

"Captain John Brents joined General Geroge Rogers Clark at Louisville when Governor Dinwiddie sent the letter to take possession of Ohio Valley. Captain Brents helped build the first fort, and made the first settlement where Louisville now stands; he was drowned at Ohio Falls while passing over the rapids in a boat with his company, the boat having foundered on a rock and capsized."
