Notes for Mary Elizabeth Shelton
Middle name is from the Martin Sandidge manuscript. He also says that she was the daughter of William Shelton and Lucy Harris.
The Dickinson descendants list has Mary Sandidge (wife of James Cole Dickinson) as the daughter of Joseph Sandidge and Elizabeth Shelton.
There are questions about whether this is the correct wife for Joseph Sandidge. Following is from a posting to the SANDIDGE mailing list by Ethel Smith, dated 6 Dec 2012:
There is only one record in the Louisa County courthouse of a marriage of Joseph Sandidge - I have seen it and have a clerk's copy of it, and that is of his marriage bond to Elizabeth Wright. The record is on page 19 of the Marriage Register for 1766-1856. The date of the bond is February 11,1782, with James Byars as witness.
I know many have insisted upon listing Joseph as married to Mary Elizabeth Shelton on February 14, 1782 so I have assumed as you suggest [referring to a posting by Martin Sandidge dated 5 Dec 2012], that her full name was Mary Elizabeth Shelton Wright, the widow of a man named Wright. No one has come forward to document that actual marriage date, but it's very likely that they went to the courthouse on Monday, February11, 1782 and then were married in church or elsewhere on Thursday, February 14 (Velentine's Day)! I like to think that my ancestors were that romantic!
