Notes for Elizabeth A. Mayfield

Apparently, Micajah C. Sandidge and his first wife, Elizabeth A. Mayfield, were first cousins, both being grandchildren of Joshua Brents and Rebecca Worley. I don't have 100% proof of this, but there are several pieces of evidence that together seem quite convincing to me. Micajah C. Sandidge was the oldest son of John W. Sandidge and Maria L. Brents, who was the oldest daughter of Joshua Brents and Rebecca Worley. My evidence for Maria L. Brents being the wife of John W. Sandidge is given elsewhere; here I give the evidence that Elizabeth A. Mayfield was also a Brents.

"History of Saline County, Missouri", in the biography of Micajah C. Sandidge, says that his first wife was Elizabeth Mayfield, daughter of Dr. Thomas Mayfield of Barren Co., KY. A cemetery record on Ancestry.com (Cemetery Records of Saline County, Missouri Volume II) has a listing for Elizabeth A. Sandidge, "w. of M. G. dau. of Thomas and Ellen D. Mayfield" (probably a bad transcription on the initial "G"). The 1850 census for Hart Co., KY (Image 194 on Ancestry.com), has a listing for Thomas Mayfield, physician; wife Ellen D. Mayfield; and daughter Elizabeth A. Mayfield, 4 months old (enumeration took place on 14 Sep 1850, which is just right for Elizabeth to be 4 months old, as the cemetery record implies she was born on 12 May 1850). Thus, Elizabeth's mother was Ellen D. Mayfield. There is a record on Ancestry.com (Kentucky, Death Records, 1852-1953), which lists the death of Ellen D. Mayfield on 7 Mar 1858 in Hart Co., KY, at the age of 27 years, 9 months, 1 day (which would make her birth date 6 June 1830). It lists her parents as Joshua & Rebecca Brents and says that she was a widow. So Dr. Mayfield died even earlier (there is a death record for him on 27 Apr 1855) and Elizabeth was orphaned when her mother died. I don't have a marriage record for Thomas Mayfield and Ellen D. Brents, but there are two birth records on Ancestry.com (Kentucky, Birth Records, 1852-1910) that list Thomas Mayfield as the father and Ellen D. Brents as the mother. In addition, "Brents, The Joshua Tree" lists Ellen D. Brents as a daughter of Joshua Brents and Rebecca Worley, and notes that she married a Dr. Mayfield, Hart Co. One last bit of support is that in the 1860 census for Hart Co., KY (District 1 Image 47 and Woodsonville Image 1), Elizabeth Mayfield, age 10, was living with the family of E. M. Lewis. E. M. Lewis was her aunt, another daughter of Joshua Brents and Rebecca Worley, who married William H. Lewis. Elizabeth Lewis had also been widowed, so she was the head of household.
