From Find A Grave (listing for Thomas J. Moss):

Thomas J. Moss (1857-1893)

Moss was raised by his brother-in-law after his parents died when he was six. He worked hard at a young age to educate himself and graduated from Central College in Fayette, after which he taught school in Hardin County, Tennessee. He moved to Missouri with his $600 earnings and began a business which gave him the title of the "tie king of America" as he furnished crossties to different railroad companies. In 1879 Moss bought a share of John M. & G. R. Reynolds which allowed him to expand his business. Three years later he bought out his partners and organized the Moss Tie Company, eventually becoming one of the most noted institutions for supplying materials for railroad construction in the US. He also operated seven general stores in different locations. He built and became president of the Paducah, Tennessee & Alabama Railway Company and the Tennessee Midland Railway Company, was president of the Tennessee Construction Company and the Mississippi Packet Company. He was known to be genial and companionable and a considerate and kindly employer.. He supported the needy and religious and charitable institutions. His second wife, Fannie, survived him along with his two children.
