C. E. Givens, the capable cashier of The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fayette, was born in Fayette, Feb. 26, 1883, the son of Dr. H. K. and Nannie (Duncan) Givens.

Dr. H. K. Givens was born on a farm near Fayette, July 17, 1856, the son of C. E. and Mary Ann (Kring) Givens. C. E. Givens was a native of Kentucky and came to Missouri with his parents, Joseph W. and Mary Givens. C. E. Givens became a prominent farmer and stockman, as was his father, and owned large tracts of land. He died in 1907, at the age of 75 years[.] He was a member of the Methodist Church. Mary Ann (Kring) Givens was born in Fayette and died in 1912 at the age of 70 years. She was the daughter of Henry W. Kring, well known jeweler of Fayette and among the first merchants of the town. Dr. H. K. Givens was reared on his father's farm and received his education in the public schools and Central College. He was graduated from the St. Louis Medical College in 1878, and then began the practice of medicine, which he followed until 1889, at that time becoming cashier of The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fayette. In 1906 Dr. Givens was elected president of the bank, which office he now holds. He also follows farming and stock raising and now operates 1340 acres of well improved land in Howard County, and 320 acres in New Mexico. Since 1920, Dr. Givens has lived in Fayette. He is a Democrat and a member of the Methodist Church.

In 1881 Dr. H. K. Givens married Miss Nannie D. Duncan, and to this union the following children were born: Mary L., teacher, Rockford, Ill.; C. E., the subject of this sketch; Donly, lives in Kansas City, Mo.; Florence, married James S. Prosser, St. Louis; Fannie, married W. G. Lockridge, Richmond township, Howard County; and Willie, married W. L. Talbot, assistant cashier of The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fayette. Dr. Givens has served as curator of Howard-Payne College for 42 years and secretary of the board for 32 years and served as president of the board for 20 years, resigning that office in 1922. Dr. Givens is an influential and highly respected citizen of Howard County.

C. E. Givens received his education in the public schools and attended Central College for two years. He then became connected with the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fayette as bookkeeper, which office he held until 1913, when he was appointed assistant cashier. Mr. Givens is now cashier of the bank. He owns a retail and wholesale lumber yard at Glasgow, and also an interest in 400 acres of land.

On April 8, 1908, C. E. Givens married Miss Ruth Smith, a native of Fayette, and the daughter of Solon and Elizabeth (Crews) Smith, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of Richmond township. Mrs. Smith is the daughter of Dr. Crews, a sketch of whom appears in this volume. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had six children, of whom Mrs. Givens is the youngest[.] She was educated at Howard-Payne College and at Christian College in Columbia. Mr. and Mrs. Givens have two children, Margaret and Ruth.

In politics, Mr. Givens is a Democrat and he has held the office of city council for four years. He is a member of the Methodist Church and belongs to the Fayette Commercial Club. Mr. Givens has served in the office of cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fayette in a very efficient manner, and he has an extensive acquaintance in Howard County. He stands high in his community.
