WFT Volume 5, Tree 1179:
Milton was a lawyer and owned a newspaper in Lumpkin Co GA.

From Carolyn Gathright:

Justice of the inferior court and a cashier of a Gold mining company.

[HisLUMP]- p 52 1 Feb 1838, Pigeon Roost Mining Company, M. H. GATHRIGHT,
Cashier. (p 67) During the summer of 1836, a committee of three, consisting
of George W. Paschal, M. H. GATHRIGHT, and A. J. Hansell, was appointed by the
Indferior court to examine into the affairs of the county and make a report
thereon. The report embodied in the grand jury presentments for August, 1836,
.... (p 324-5) Lumpkin County Journalism, ... The SIGNET and SPY. The Herald
was short lived. An early settler of the county stated in a press interview
that the paper was moved to Dahlonega, where it soon died, that the press and
type were carried to Athens, but were soon purchased by Milton H. GATHRIGHT
and removed to Auraria where he published the "Miners' Record and Spy in the
West",Patrick Jack being the printer and George W. Paschal and Henry B. Shaw,
editors. As the statements in the interview were based purely upon memory, and
were made fifty years after the incidents to which they relate, there is room
for the possible doubt with respect to the frequent removals of the outfit,
especially as other circumstantial evidence in the case, there are reasonable
grounds for the following conclusions:
O. P. Shaw, the publishe of the Herald, was likewise the publisher of the
Athenian, a weekly paper issued in Athens. It seems that the Herald
establishment soon passed out of his hands, being bought by M. H. Gathright, a
prominent man of the day who was once a judge of the Inferior Court of Lumpkin
County. When the property changed hands the paper changed its name from the
Western Herald to the "Signet and Spy". Patrick Jack may well have been the
printer while George W. Paschal, Henry B. Shaw and others were staff
contributors. Just how long the Signet and Spy operated as such is uncertain;
but it is probable that the combined life of the Wester Herald and the Signet
and Spy was not much in excess of one year.
Darlonega Newspapers. The Miners' Record and Spy in the West. Believe
it or not, this ponderous phrase was the name of the first newspaper published
in Dahlonega. It was evidently the old Signet and Spy moved from Auraria to
Dahlonega and renamed. Milton H. Gathright, the publisher of the former
Signet and Spy, was the publisher of the first Dahlonega paper. The
establishment of the Miners' Record and Spy in the West was doubtless in the
spring of summer of 1834. At the August term of court, 1834, the grand jury
recommended that their presentments be published in the "Record and Spy".
Neither the Herald nor the Signet is mentioned in these or later presentments
of the grand jury. A the August ter, 1835, the grand jury recommended that
the presentments be published in the "Miners' Recorder," and likewise in the
Southern Whig, published at Athens.
The following appeared in the Nugget, September 3, 1909;
"We hold in our hand a copy of the Miners' Record and Spy in the West
loaned us by J. H. McKee, published in Dahlonega, January 23, 1836, by M. H.
Gathright, and printed by Samuel Tatum, at $3.00 per annum, no less than a
year's subscription taken. "....
