A Wilson Family Tree

Notes for Joseph Gathright

Situation is very mixed up. WFT Volume 5 Tree 1346 does not have the name of Joseph's wife, and it shows Sarah Bottoms as Benjamin's wife. WFT Volume 5 Tree 1179 shows Sarah Bottoms as Joseph's wife and does not list Benjamin at all. The two trees have different dates for Joseph, also. Carolyn Gathright Web page shows two wives for Joseph: Ann and Phebe Hattock, but not Sarah Bottoms. She does list Sarah Bottoms as Benjamin's wife. Children are also mixed up. WFT Volume 5 Tree 1179 does not have any children under Joseph and Sarah. WFT Volume 5 Tree 1346 lists Josiah and Miles as children (but no mother listed). Carolyn Gathright Web page lists Josiah under Joseph and Ann, and Nancy and Dabney under Phebe, but no Miles.

[CALENDARv5] (p40)- Oct 17,1789, Hanover Co, Petition from Capt. Thomas White's Company of Militia of Hanover County, to the Govenor & Council of State. (fines for non-attendance at General Muster) Showing that every one of them had been fined 10s Each by a Court Martial for non-attendance at a General Muster, & praying to be acquitted for the following reasons: That they had not been warned so to do; that the sheriff gave them the first notice by demanding the fines; that they conceive that they have the Constitutional right to be heard before being condemned; are convinced that upon principals of
common justice, they could have cleared themselves, had they been allowed the liberty of defending themselves; and appeal to the dispensing power of the Executive for relief from the fine. This petition is accompanied by a swarn statement from John Chappel, Nathan Barker, & Jeremiah Lindsey, Sergents in Capt. Thomas White's Company, setting forth that they did not receive orders to warn the said Company to appear at the General Muster, & did not warn them that they heard no such orders given; Lindsey however recollected hearing the Lieutenant of said company, after the company was disbanded, and a great part gone, give notice of the General Muster. The names of the Company are Wm. Spur, David Martin, John Bailey, Nathaniel Talloy, David Gooch, Edmund Hooper, James Bingham, John Wood, John Boatright, Obediah Tucker, George Slaughter, Anthony Ingram, JOSEPH GATHRIGHT, Thomas Slaughter, Elias White, David Acre, Heartwell Boatright, John Perry, James Hooper, John Acre, Aaron Marsh, Richard Meux, & Joshua Acre.

[VGSQxxxi1]-Legislative Petitions - Hanover County.. p 7, November 10, 1779, Freeholderso of Lands on both sides of Chickahominy Swamp show that their property boundaries are very difficult to ascertain since the run divides the land into several sluces.
