Notes for Ann Morton
Many sources say that William Gathright married Ann (Carolyn Gathright spells it Anna) Morton, daughter of Thomas Morton and Elizabeth Woodson. There is a lot of information available about the Morton and Woodson families, among which is that Thomas Morton and Elizabeth Woodson married about 1718. So there is no way that Ann Morton married this William Gathright about 1724, as several sources say. The Ann Morton who was the daughter of Thomas Morton and Elizabeth Woodson was not born until the (early?) 1720's. Either it was a different William Gathright that she married (and a different Ann that he married) or he had an earlier wife before he married her. The gap in birth years of the children is suggestive -- perhaps Ann Morton was the mother of the children born in the 1740's and a different wife was the mother of the children born in the 1720's.
Some other bits of information about Ann Morton: Her father Thomas Morton died in 1730 or 1731 and his will mentions his eldest daughter Ann. The will would have given her married name if she were married -- but since she was probably less than 10 years old, she wouldn't have been married. In 1740, Elizabeth (Woodson) Morton deeded lands to her children, including Ann. Ann is listed as Ann Gathright, wife of William Gathright. So she was married to William Gathright by 1740. But was it this William Gathright? Details about Thomas's will and various land transactions are at http://mortonfamilyresearch.blogspot.com/2005_08_14_mortonfamilyresearch_archive.html
