[ARDAR95]- 'Baptists to observe 90th Anniversary' The first Baptist Church in Clarksville, (Johnson Co), Arkansas Will observe its 90th Anniversary, Sunday, May 25, 1975, with special services throughout the day... The First Baptist Church was organized the fourth Sunday in May 1885 by Elder J.B. Barry and Deacons W.T. Soard and W.T. Evans and eight charter members. New members were added and in Feb 1886 Bro. D.E. Gambrell was called to preach the 1th and 4th Sundays in each month. He remained pastor until Jan 1887, according to old records. During the next two or Three years the church became disorganized and meetings ceased until Aug 1890 when a group of interested persons met and voted to continue the old Organization...Mr and Mrs Jack Rogers has a spacious new brick home on a large plot of ground just north of cherry street in downtown Clarksville and Mrs. Rogers offered the Baptist Church a lot on which to build....On Nov 8 1894 the church voted to erect a frame building on the property given by Mrs Rogers....Pastors, other than those mentioned, have been: R.E. Cornelius, M.F. GATHRIGHT,...Published in the Graphic May 22, 1975.
[ARBAPT]- was born in 1864 near Nashville, began to preach at the age of 31 in Louisiana, attended Ouachita College, pastor at DeValls Bluff, at Clarksville , then was a missionary. He passed away in 1945.
