Rex Smith

November 10, 1948 – March 5, 2020

Roy “Rex” Smith, 71 years old, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 5, 2020, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Rex was born in Levelland, Texas, November 10, 1948, to Roy E. “Buck” and Christine Smith. Rex Smith and Nelva Haralson were married in Lubbock, Texas, on June 28, 1969, and were soulmates and best friends for almost 51 years.

Rex was a faithful and committed husband and father. He enjoyed working with his hands and was skilled at electrical and mechanical work, auto mechanics, construction, plumbing, tiling, etc. He was a brilliant man, always helping his daughters with their Calculus homework! He also had a heart for helping others with his talents and never turned down the chance to help. He had an eye for detail and perfection. He began working at a very young age of 14 years old on drilling rigs. Then later worked for Amoco as a foreman at the CO2 plant for 23+ years, until he took early retirement. After retiring, he worked for Lubbock Power & Light for 20 years. Rex greatly enjoyed RV camping with his family, and loved to go off-the-beaten path to explore two-track trails and dry creek beds through the woods. Also, Rex loved Jesus and wanted others to know Him too, often taking opportunities to share his miracle story about his amazing Savior. Rex had a great sense of humor and loved being with his family.

Rex is survived by his loving wife, Nelva Smith, and his two daughters, Valerie and husband David Atencio of Albuquerque, NM, and Kayla and husband James Wood and grandchildren, Anne Marie, Bethany, and Sean Wood of Stephenville, TX; brother, Odis Ray and wife Ellen Smith of Pine Hurst, NC; sisters-in-law, Karin Sullivan of Burleson, TX, Cloie Muncy, Judy Haralson; brother-in-law, Arlan and wife Betty Haralson.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Roy E. and Christine Smith; mother-in-law, Ila Haralson; sister-in-law, Wilta Haralson; brothers-in-law, Jim Muncy, David Haralson, James Sullivan and Robert Earl Haralson.

Pallbearers of Lubbock Power & Light: Joe Ybarra, Terence Kovar, Kenny Taylor, Randy Teaff, Reggie Hargrove and Scott Wright. Rex worked at LPL with these guys for about 20 years and loved working with them.
