Notes for Gaylon Kent Gathright

The Clinton Daily News, 15 Aug 2002, pp. 1, 8:

Gathright dies at 53

Clinton postal employee Gaylon Gathright, age 53, who had been involved in recent years in performances at the Southwest Playhouse, succumbed after a brief battle with an aggressive brain tumor on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. He died at his home.

Services for Gathright have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton with Rev. Steve Brant and Rev. Larry King officiating.

Gathright was born on May 29, 1949 at Sentinel, the son of David and Wilma Gathright.

He attended high school at Dill City, graduating in 1967, and then attended Oklahoma State University where he obtained a degree in forestry.

Gathright met and married Florence Stanley in 1974 in Woodward while working for the former TG&Y store there.

In 1980, he went to work for the Post Office in Clinton where he continued to work until the time of his death.

During this time he also attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he obtained a degree in accounting and then passed the certified public accountant examination.

Gathright always enjoyed learning new things, the latest being how to play the bagpipes.

He also enjoyed activities out-of-doors, summer or winter. In years past he had been very involved in Clinton's youth soccer program as a referee, performing one of the most demanding and least appreciated jobs in the program. Many youngsters learned about good sportsmanship and fair play through his impartial officiating.

He recently became very involved in the Southwest Playhouse, having performed one of the lead roles last fall in the community theatre's production of "The Sunshine Boys."

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Wilce and Mildred Jones and Elmer and Rosie Gathright, all of Dill City.

Interment will be in the South Burns Cemetery northwest of Dill City under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; his daughter, Julie of Oklahoma City; his son, David of Longmont, Colo.; his parents, David and Wilma Gathright of Dill City; two sisters, Sue Huddleston and her husband, David, of Elk City, Anita Headrick of Elk City; a brother, Gordon Gathright and his wife, Valorie, of San Antonio, Texas; five nieces; and five nephews.

The family suggests that those who desire may make memorial contributions in Gathright's honor to either the First United Methodist Church Choir, or Southwest Playhouse or Clinton Public Library.

He was the author of the Gaylon Gathright GEDCOM file, and submitted most of it as WFT Volume 1, Tree 3935. There is additional information about his wife's and mother's ancestors and family in them.
