Notes for Friedrich Johann Christian (Fritz) Lange
According to Florine Winkler, he immigrated on 18 Oct 1886 at New York City, NY. According to the 1920 census, he was naturalized in 1920.
The name on his death certificate is Fritz C. Lange. Cause of death was appoplexy. Place of death is listed as Karnes Co., TX (Precinct One).
A letter by Elise Fenner follows (obtained from Jeanette Stehr-Green). It is not dated and the addressee is not named, but it was probably to Jeanette. There are some small errors, but I leave it as is, except that I have added some missing punctuation.
Dear One:
I am afraid I can't help you much. I have rewritten it 2 times and before I know it I got a big mess again.
Fritz Lange was born in Germany. He came to Texas when he was 21 years old. He settled in a small town of Altair. It was close to Columbus, Texas. There he got a job of hawling freight in a wagon & 6 mules.
When he was there a few years, He had his girl friend from Germany come over. they were married and they had 3 children, 2 boys & 1 girl. The mother and the boys died. That left Papa with the little girl, Erna. I think in a year he (Papa) got married again. He got married to our mother, Alma Sommerlate. They had 9 children. They lived close to Columbus, Tex. Then moved to Karnes City. Their children were Minnie, Charlie, Bertha, Ernest, August, Elise, Ella, Alfred, & Mary.
Minnie passed away. She was about 16. Charlie married Millie, they had 2 children, 1 son died soon after birth, 1 son is married. Bertha married Paul Hofmann and they had 2 children. Lillie Mae is married to Willie Lampricht. They have 2 girls. 1 lives in Beeville. The other lives in Karnes City. They are both married. Ernest died very young.
August was married, they had 1 Son. Elise was married, they had 3 children. Their 1st baby, a son, di[e]d at the age of 15m. Then they had Florine, now married to James Winkler, & Cora was married to Dick Fischer.
Ella married Jacob Wernli, they had 2 girls. Alfred married Ruby. They had 3 children, Ruby Pearl, Janace, and Larry. and Mary married to Leo R. Green. They had 3 children, Blane died, 2 girls.
I know this is a big mess. But I have rewritten this 3 times and it came out worse every time. Florine has more from way back, and said she would send it to you. But knowing Florine it may be a long time.
I hope you are both well.
I spent a few days with your Mother last week. I will have to quit or go nuts. This realy is not my best thing to do. I am getting so forgetful. Love you.
