Notes for Elizabeta (Elizabeth) Dukic

Her last name was Dukić (accent over the c). Spelling of Elizabeta for her first name is from Roberto Žigulić. Her first name is spelled Elizabeth, Eliza, and Liza in various American records. (She is listed as Lizzie in a 1915 Trinidad directory, obtained from Ancestry.com.)

It looks like Elizabeth came to the U.S. on the ship La Champagne, departing from Le Havre, France, and arriving at Ellis Island on 2 Jun 1901. A passenger named Dukic Jelisana Trinajstic is listed (http://www.ellisisland.org). The name listing is strange, but the manifest said that she was going to join her husband in Majestic, CO, which would fit. Age of 25 also fits. Place of residence is listed as Kastuc (maybe supposed to be Kastua = Kastav).

Initial information on the ancestors of Elizabeta Dukić was obtained from Roberto Žigulić in 2009 and 2010. Additional information was obtained in 2018 from Marija Puharić-Haraslić and Miljenko Ujčić of the Genealogy Center of Kastav and Liburnia (Rodoslovni centar Kastavštine i Liburnije). There are some troubling inconsistencies, which leave open the possibility that some of the information from Croatia is not right. The information from the Genealogy Center has the names in a Latinized form. They list Elizabeta as Elisabetha Dukich-Banicich. According to Dee Sardoch, the part of the name after the hyphen is called the nadimak and is sort of like a clan name. (Roberto Žigulić explained it like this: a name like Jardas-Garić means surname Jardas in the settlement Garići. It was especially used when the man Jardas married a woman with surname Garići and became a son-in-law in his wife's family.)

The name on her death certificate is Elizabeth Trinaistach. Cause of death was influenza. She died at San Rafael Hospital (? hard to read). Her father's name is listed as John Dupich -- which doesn't fit with the father's name of Mate (Mathias) in the Status Animarum. (Something I will note, though, is that Elizabeta's parents apparently died when she was very young, and I don't know who raised her after their death.)
Headstone of her grave says Mother, 1875 - 1927.
